When I got the treatment I needed, I was able to summon the strength to find a way out. Right now, there is a bill in Sacramento that will help to stop the waste - in lives and dollars - that's endemic to California's over-incarceration crisis. Educating California students fairly 18th Annual Law Luncheon On June 8, we'll be honoring the many committed advocates and activists  leading the fight for civil liberties  in Southern California, featuring video presentations by The Daily Show's  Aasif Mandvi and the activist rock band  Rise Against . BUY TICKETS Across California, public school students are suspended and expelled at alarming rates -- often for minor misbehavior that used to mean a trip to the principal's office or a talk with a school counselor. It's a disturbing trend and it doesn't work. Research shows that severe discipline does nothing to make schools safer or to improve graduation rates. Students of color, students with disabilities and LGBT students are particularly likely to be suspended or expelled.
